More about the Shakespeare Contest

Pittsburgh Public Theater's Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contenst is a time-honored tradition that began 30 years ago with just 75 students. Now, hundreds of students participate in schools across the region annually. At the heart of the Contest is a deduction to instilling a love for theater and appreciation of Shakespeare into the lives of young people.

Along with the chance to explore classic text through a modern educational lens and the opportunity to express themselves through physical and vocal storytelling, participants have the distinct opportunity to perform their monologue or scene in the acclaimed O'Reilly Theater.  The contest culminates in a Showcase of Finalists on The O'Reilly stage, from which a dynamic panel of judges selects winners in each category. On the same night, the Rob Zellers Award for Excellence in Arts Education is presented to honor a teacher who passionately provides quality arts education experiences for their students.

The Shakespeare Monologue & Scene contest helps fulfill The Public's mission of sharing its resources through education and engagement initiatives for a wide range of people to expand and diversify our audience while enriching the community.
