Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest

This unique event inspires fourth through twelfth graders to learn more about the work of William Shakespeare. Through this contest experience, students build self assurance, practice teamwork and develop greater concentration and self-discipline.

"It supplies a forum for communication and critical analysis skills. It requires leadership and teamwork among the students. It provides an introduction to theater and a gateway to the arts for our young people."
- Cyd Stackhouse, Marshall Middle School

Students prepare selections, receive coaching from theater professionals and perform on our main stage for family and friends during the contest's final rounds.

"My daughter has gained valuable experience, not only about appearing on stage, but about personal accomplishment. The respect and seriousness shown by The Public's education and outreach staff, judges and coaches is very special."
- Mother of student from Rogers Middle School

A favorite of students and teachers, this contest fosters a life-long appreciation of the dramatic arts.

"Thanks so much for what you and the rest of the folks at The Public have done to help us teachers make Shakespeare accessible to our students. I attended the showcase last night and had one of the most enjoyable evenings of my life. ... You have done great service to literature and drama education in Western Pennsylvania."
- Laura Miller, Rhema Christian School

Last year's Shakespeare Monologue & Scene contest attracted a record high of more than 1,000 students.
