Creative Dramatics
Creative Dramatics brings together fourth and fifth graders from economically and ethnically diverse parts of the city to participate in a 12-week collaborative performing arts experience culminating in a Saturday performance at the O'Reilly Theater. Through theater games and exercises, students will learn to focus their energy, share their imagination, and express themselves through movement and spoken word. The program also helps children to develop public speaking skills, teamwork skills, greater concentration, and self-discipline. As one teacher put it:
"Creative Dramatics is the best outreach program I have seen in many years of teaching. The benefits to students are tremendous. Students are much more self-assured and willing to participate in class and group activities. Their communication skills are dramatically improved, and their self-esteem soars...Creative Dramatics provides a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with children from different backgrounds and expand their horizons."
Creative Dramatics creates a safe and nurturing environment for children, helping them to build self-esteem and make new friends from different backgrounds. At the program's conclusion, students present ensemble performances on our main stage, sharing their work with family and friends.
The Public currently partners with Beechwood Elementary, Perrysville Elementary School, Robert L. Vann Elementary School, Kerr Elementary School, Dilworth Traditional Academy, and Hartwood Elementary School.
